In the past decade, there have been numerous of articles citing countless studies on the effect that sitting for prolonged periods at work has on your back. Just recently, however, studies have also shown that being on your feet for hours on end can have just as damaging effect, if not worse.

Researchers ETH Zurich in Switzerland have conducted a study on the effects on standing for long periods of time. They have found that, along with the back pain, daily spells on long term standing can cause sustained muscle fatigue and serious joint pain. Workers in the study were on their feet for periods of 5 hours, with seated breaks lasting no more than 5 minutes, as well as a 30 minute lunch break. Despite the breaks, the participants noticed fatigue and discomfort throughout the day, regardless of their age, with younger participants being just as likely to get fatigued as those in the older group.

Across the world, almost half of the workforce has to stand for over three quarters of their work day. From assembly line workers, to machine operators, to sales personnel, many types of jobs require being on your feet. However, this study shows that long term health, as well as well as productivity and performance, can suffer as a result of such sustained periods of standing. According to the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety, common issues that come with long periods on your feet include sore feet, swollen legs, varicose veins, and neck or shoulder stiffness.

Those that are on their feet for hours on end should consider taking regular breaks, just as those who are remaining seated at their desk. Variation in work routine also aids in avoiding these medical woes. Rather than causing yourself discomfort, pay attention to what your body is telling you. Take rests when needed and take time to relax outside of the workplace.
