There are few things more important than having a primary care physician (PCP). However, shockingly many people still do not see the need for one. Having and visiting a PCP is vital for anyone who wishes to maintain good health and live a good and productive life. Regular checkups with a PCP will not take up too much time but could add many more healthy years to your life.
The role of a PCP is to:
- Provide preventative health care and encourage positive lifestyle behaviors.
- Identify and treat common illnesses.
- Evaluate how urgent your medical condition is and direct you to the appropriate place of care.
- Are able to recommend specialist if needed.
It is always a good idea to retain the same PCP over time, and when choosing a PCP it is imperative that you feel comfortable and be able to build and maintain a trusting relationship. Using the same PCP means they will know your medical background which will give them a better understanding of your health and any concerns you may have. However it is important to note that there are various different kinds of PCP and at certain times in your life you may need a different PCP. The different types of PCP are:
- Pediatricians: For newborns, children, infants, and adolescents
- Obstetricians/gynecologists: For women, especially pregnant women.
- Family practitioners: For children and adults of all ages. These PCP’s are also able to perform minor surgeries.
- Internists: For adults of all ages with various medical problems.
- Physician assistants and Nurse practitioners: A licensed healthcare professional able to practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Research has shown that regular visits to a PCP not only reduce the amount of emergency room visits but also improve the quality of life for the said individual. Regular checkups with your PCP will help detect early signs of certain conditions and diseases thus leading to a better prognoses.
